Playing Hooky

Yesterday, the boys and I played hooky.  I used Keegan's slight morning cough as an excuse but really, everyone was fine.  We just all wanted a day without obligations.  Lots of playing.  A little crafting.  Reading.  And a hike.  It was unseasonably warm for November and we took advantage of it.  Warning:  In the following photos, you may see children who "hate hiking."  Don't be fooled by their smiles.  They really didn't enjoy themselves.  Ha!

We don't tend to overschedule ourselves during the week and it wasn't that our weekend was so very hectic but there was still that need to be somewhere.  Yesterday it was nice to not need to be anywhere but where we wanted to be.

There is something freeing about playing hooky, isn't there?

  1. Yes, there is! I'm fascinated seeing your pictures (not just of boys that don't like hiking at all, obviously:), but how far apart we live and yet how many similarities there are in the landscapes we see. Sounds like a good day for all.

  2. Life's too short not to play hooky once in awhile. Glad I'm not the only one whose kept a kid home for the slightest "cold symptoms." Looks like they had a great time just being boys! ;-))

  5. i looove that you play hooky with your kids. you are teaching them such a valuable lesson - balance and taking care of oneself - especially out in nature. i love the pictures of them rolling in the leaves - is that what they're doing? i will post pictures later of ezra at the beach too - my boy who doesn't ever want to go to the beach because it's too sandy. so funny how they give so much whine about going and then love it!

  8. Good reminder that I haven't played hooky in far too long! Oddly enough I have two that greatly dislike hiking as well, and I've yet to capture that on their faces in the moment. :)

  9. I think we need to follow your lead, do a bit more in the hooky department.

And for what it's worth? My kids profess to hate (HATE!!!) hiking, also. What's with these modern peeps?
